hi guys i emailed the sellerl of item below and has told me it will work on my car 2.3 1998, could someone tell me where the vagcom port is or if anyone can give me some idea where i could get something that does the same job as this ie could recomend one.

Don't forget that as you have the 2.3 petrol engine, vag-com won't communicate fully. It will do the vehicle modules, but won't do any powertrain ones. Your best bet (until you get a TDI) is to get a universal code reader.

hmmm i looked for diagnostic port today where you said but cant find it, i looked by the fuse box but cant see anything that looks like a 16 pin socket george could you explain power train for me is that increasing bhp, might even get both to be honest i looked a universal code readers on ebay they can be bought fairly cheaply i would like one that works on the diesel when i get one,

 

whilst talking on diesel's there are 3 a 90/115 and a 130 is the 90 very under powered and should i stay away from this one im sure ive read the 130 is the one to have as thay are quite fast, reason i ask is my wife ferrys my kids and the large dog we have around in ours and rarely does long journeys furthest we go is 65 miles from home when we visit the mother in law in clacton but must admit its fully loaded when we do go, so would the 90 cut the mustard or would it be very very slow i see a lot of the diesel's are the 110 model.

as you have a mk 1 the diagnostic port is behind your ashtray pull it out and you will see a purple conector hope this help you

 

 

i first checked behind the ashtray lifted it out and found another black panel is it under there looks like i have a screw to remove if thats the case, either that or i dont have a port in my car.

i lifted out the ashtray shiney plastic unused looked for port cant see anything but there is another shiney plastic bit which looks like its held in by a screw, will have a look tomorrow hopefully i will be doing my dreaded topmount tomorrow if my shock absorber turns up not a job im looking forward to.

good news today i found the purple vag com port its under the second ashtray section, last night i read loads of post's off here ref vagcom leads and software and see that a lot of people had grief with loading drivers and all sorts of problems, i may go with a stand alone hand held device as im not to clever with computers and found this one it covers quite a lot of different software and should hopefully work, come pay day i might invest in one still waiting for bloody shock absorber to come what a waste of a nice day.

I hate it when things don't come when you're expecting them, if you do have any probs with VAG COM and none of the other VAG COM topics help, just post up your problems.

be carefull as a mk1 gal 2.0l and 2.3l is not obd compliant you need a dedicated adapter to fit the ford to read the engine,on 1.9tdi's its pur vw.

the handhelds dont do ford by memory u need a pwm or vpw unit, for engine and kkl for airbags and brakes, vag com the software will only work with vag vw aud group. which use kkl. for reading the engine the software is called scantool which is free. hope this saves you a load of grief
